For many women in their 50s, the idea of looking like they’re in their 30s seems like a dream. But for Carolyn Hartz of Perth, Australia, it’s not a fantasy, and it hasn’t been for a while. Even at age 70 and having given birth to three children, Hartz looks more like a woman in her mid 30’s, proudly showing off her body in a bikini on the beaches of Australia.
Today we’re taking a look at how she got to where she is today and how she’s maintained her lifestyle well into her golden years, including her substitute for sugar that allows her to indulge her sweet tooth!
10. Carolyn’s History With Food
What makes Carolyn Hartz’s story more impressive is that she used to be one of those women in her middle ages struggling with her body. At the age of 42, she found herself addicted to sweets and far from pleased with her body. Her biggest problem was that she was diagnosed as gluten intolerant, which caused her to turn to sugar to solve her problems.
“I went up a whole dress size because I was filling myself up on sugar.” she said.

9. Sweet Without Sugar
Realizing that focusing solely on gluten-free products was leading her in the wrong direction, Carolyn began baking her treats herself rather than buying them already made. Instead of relying on sugar, she focused on sugar-free sweeteners to get the flavor she wanted without the negative effects. Her body began to respond, and she quickly realized she was on to something.
8. Xylitol Provides The Answer
Finding the right sweetener was a breakthrough, and in a naturally occurring sweetener, Carolyn found her sugar substitute of choice. Xylitol became the perfect choice because of its molecular structure, which only allows helpful bacteria to metabolize it, limiting the risk of sickness and disease. Its status made its name an easy one when Carolyn started her company: Perfect Sweet.
7. Living the Sugar-Free Life
Amazingly, Carolyn hasn’t had any sugar that isn’t found naturally in 28 years. The only sugar she ever consumes is what occurs naturally in berries or dark chocolate, which limits her sugar consumption to negligible amounts. Otherwise, she’s been sugar-free ever since 1989, and she’s healthier and happier than she’s ever been.
“We know our metabolism slows down as we get older. It just means we have to take control and make healthier choices, and work a little harder,” she said.

6. Deprivation Doesn’t Work
One reason that many diets fail is because people try to completely cut out the foods they really love because those foods aren’t seen as healthy. What always happens is that eventually, they end up overeating and undoing their progress. Carolyn instead opts for sweets in moderation, baked at home so she knows exactly what’s in them, along with the addition of dark chocolate. As long as you control portion sizes, you can enjoy what you really love.
“I eat two pieces of dark chocolate every night.” she said.
