People have an almost inherent love for animals. But few groups of people have as much love for them as PETA. On a seemingly regular day, 2 PETA volunteers were visiting a dog that was chained up in a yard. They gave it food, played a while and took some photos. When they showed the photos back at the office, a co-worker of theirs was in shock. She was certain the chained up dog was one she used to know, one that had suddenly gone missing. Continue reading to see what happens in this heartwarming story that will surely tug your heart strings.
#12 Meet Edith the Dog
The dog I was speaking about in the intro goes by the name of Edith, and she is an adorable black mix chow. While Edith did, in fact, have owners, they were very neglectful towards her. They had not only chained her up in their yard, but gave her very little food, love, and affection.
#11 Help Appears
But thankfully, Edith’s luck was about to change. Back in 2006, a PETA worker named Jessica Cochran noticed the dog that was neglected of all its basic needs. Cochran paid her regular visits to give her the love and affection she needed. However, things weren’t all peaches and cream just yet.
#10 Stubborn Owner
When most of us know we are unable to care for something any longer, we know the right thing to do is to give it away to someone that can. Unfortunately, Edith’s owner had no interest in giving up the dog to a better home, even though they barely cared for her as is.
#9 A Strong and Immediate Bond
Cochran had been working with animals for years and has likely come in contact with hundreds of them in her time with PETA. However, there was something about Edith that was different. She felt an immediate bond with the dog and knew that something had to be done to help this dog get a new lease on life.
#8 Hard to Ignore
Despite there obviously being other things out there for Cochran and other PETA volunteers to do, it’s hard to ignore a dog who just wants to be loved. Since the owner wouldn’t give her up, Cochran and other PETA workers continued to visit Edith for years. The dog also seemed to love the company and affection more than treats and food.
#7 Same Old Puppy
Despite the dog being years older than when Cochrane first met her, she still acted like a puppy. Dogs are very social animals and not meant to be confined. Before Cochran, Edith likely had no outlet for her “puppy energy” but once Cochran came along to play, Edith became very social and loved to play, something that she never lost with age.
For seven years, Cochran would go and visit her furry friend on a regular basis. But when she went to go visit Edith on a regular day in 2013, she was shocked to see that Edith was gone. She was obviously extremely worried about Edith and was concerned about where she went. It was obvious the family had moved away and taken their dog, but where did they go?
#5 A Black Dog on a Chain
A few years went by and Cochran had all but given up hope on finding Edith. She knew her family had moved away, but she had no way of contacting them. Then one day out of nowhere, some of her colleagues brought some photos to work and Cochran was in shock.
#4 It Was Edith
A few years after Edith went missing, a few PETA workers were doing routine visits to neglected animals in North Carolina. Next to a shabby trailer, they found a scruffy black dog and gave it some love and attention before returning to the office with photos. As soon as she saw the photos, Cochran knew it was Edith.
#3 Recognition of an Old Friend
Without any hesitation, Cochran rushed to the address of her old friend to pay Edith a visit. Surprisingly, the dog seemed to remember her too as Edith was jumping for joy when Cochran arrived. After talking to the owner, it was revealed that they were about to move to somewhere that didn’t allow pets, so something had to be done with Edith.
#2 Incredible Timing
As you could imagine, the timing could not have been better. PETA was able to locate Edith right as her owners were looking to give her a new home. After being friends for almost a decade, Cochran was finally able to adopt Edith as her own and give her a real home.
#1 A Story With a Happy Ending
Cochran and Edith spend a ton of time together as they make up for the time Edith was neglected. Adoption is harder for older dogs, but thankfully Edith was adopted by someone who has known her for years. Both Edith and Cochran could not be happier with how this story ended.
It is so wonderful to see a story that began so negative end on such a positive note. Seeing a dog struggling is never easy, especially for someone working so closely with PETA. But thankfully, Jessica Cochran never gave up on Edith, despite years of dealing with her stubborn owner. When Edith went away, Cochran though she had lost her friend forever. But once the two reunited, Cochran knew she could never lose her again. To see a dog that was neglected for years finally get a second chance at a good life is truly an amazing thing to see.
