The Sappiest, Yet Most Romantic Movies Ever Made

Everyone has their favorite movie genre. For some movie lovers, that genre happens to be ROMANCE.

Many times, romantic films are regarded as cheap “chick flicks,” simply because they’re filled with steamy sexual tension, declarations of love, and generally few explosions.

But that’s not entirely fair! So-called chick flicks usually cross over with another genre to secure wider appeal. The sappiest, yet most romantic movies ever made could also be considered great comedies, for instance.

Enough burying the lead. The films on this list are exactly what we’re talking about. They’re incredibly sappy, but chances are, you probably like more than a few of these modern classics.

12. When Harry Met Sally

When Harry Met Sally

is the perfect example of a story where friends finally realize they have deeper feelings for one another. Harry and Sally, who were friends for years, had a natural chemistry, and a love they tried so hard to deny. Eventually, the two stopped suppressing their feelings and realized they were made for each other.
11. Say Anything

Nothing is more swoon-worthy in Say Anything than the now-iconic boom box scene. It had everyone trying to woo their lover by playing music outside of their bedroom window on full blast. This film was one of the various 80s romantic films that have since become a staple in pop culture.

10. P.S. I Love You

When a grief-stricken widow receives a series of love letters from her deceased husband, it takes her on an extravagant journey she didn’t quite expect. Those letters are what Hillary Swank’s character, Holly, needed in order gain the strength and courage to move on with her life without her husband.

9. Notting Hill

Notting Hill sums up what happens when a person finds love when they least expect it. We get to see Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant in the prime of their careers. Their characters, Anna Scott and Will Thacker, work excessively through their hectic lives in order to make their new found love work.

8. Dirty Dancing

Dirty Dancing

showcases what happens when two people who live different lifestyles come together and fall in love. The forbidden attraction between Johnny and Baby keeps drawing you into the film and wondering what’ll happen next. The film features all the dancing, heartache, disappointment and even bliss that every young love endures.

7. Ghost

Ghost is the perfect example of someone going above and beyond for their lover, even beyond the grave. Sam had to send his warning to Molly through psychic Oda Mae Brown in order to save Molly’s life from his friend, Carl. Having your lover reach out to you after they’ve passed away to save your life is a great love story.

6. Titanic

Leonardo DiCaprio had everyone falling for his character Jack Dawson in Titanic. There are too many iconic and sappy moments in the film to choose from. The photo above shows one, Jack drawing Rose like one of his French girls is another, and then of course, there’s always Jack dying from hypothermia when there was totally plenty of room on the door for both of them.

5. Southside With You

Southside With You gave audiences a glimpse into the beginnings of the love story between future President Barack Obama and a young Michelle Robinson. The film follows the events of the duo’s first date in Chicago in 1989. It’s pretty much a political love story that eventually led to history being made in the U.S.

4. A Walk To Remember

A Walk to Remeber is one of the various novels by Nicholas Sparks that’s been turned into a film. The unexpected chemistry between Landon Carter and Jamie Sullivan was undeniable. It was surreal to see the duo’s love come full circle, yet heartbreaking that their bliss ended abruptly with her death.

3. The Fault In Our Stars

Not only is The Fault in Our Stars a romantic film, but it’s also a tearjerker. It follows the lives of two teenaged cancer patients who meet at a support group and eventually fall in love. The Fault in Our Stars is a sad, dramatic, yet romantic teenage love story.

2. The Holiday

The Holiday is a two-for-one-deal kind of a movie. It’s both a romantic and a holiday film rolled into one. After all, who doesn’t love a good holiday love story? The film follows what happens when two women are trying to get over their recent heartbreaks in different countries, but surprisingly find new love on their holiday vacations.

1. The Notebook

Many people may have shed a few tears after seeing The Notebook for the first time, and rightfully so. It has the boy-meets-girl storyline that eventually leads to a whirlwind of emotions until the very last scene. This film was also based on a novel written by Nicholas Sparks. That dude knows what he’s doing.

Yes, there are plenty of other romantic films out that that may or may not be mushier than the ones featured on this list. Either way, these will surely tug at your heart strings. Take a trip down memory lane while watching these movies, and remember how you felt the first time you’ve ever watched them.

Maybe you watched the movies at a younger and age and couldn’t quite grasp what made them so sappy and romantic. Now that you’re older, chances are, you could probably relate to a few films now. Or maybe you’re jaded and think they suck no matter what because you hate nice things. Go away!
