For the most part, dogs provide love and entertainment when they are kept as pets but every now and again a dog will do something so out of the ordinary that we might wonder if they aren’t just a little bit human themselves.
This amazing dog went over and above being someone’s best friend. In fact, you won’t believe what John Boy did for his owner one Winter.
12. From Humble Beginnings
John Boy had an unfortunate start in life. He was abandoned at an animal shelter, as are more than 7 million dogs each year in the USA, and despite being adopted, he was returned three times before finding a forever home with his fourth owner. He would repay that gift of love handsomely.
11. Walking Alone
Officer Jeff Gonzalez of Germantown, Wisconsin spotted John Boy pacing the streets of Germantown one winter morning. He was confused as to why the dog, which he knew, would be all alone in the road rather than at home with his owner. He called the dog over and what happened next was incredible.
10. Stop And Go!
Officer Gonzalez got out of his patrol car to greet the dog which wandered close enough to be petted and then promptly ran away as though he wanted the policeman to follow him. His curiosity was aroused for some reason and he decided to chase the dog for a little bit.
9. John’s Home
The officer approached John’s home carefully. He picked his way through the snow and wondered what the dog was trying to tell him. While they may teach you many things in the police academy, reading canine body language isn’t one of them. So he wasn’t prepared for what he found at all.
8. The Bad News
When Officer Gonzalez reached the porch of John’s home, he would make a terrifying discovery. John’s owner was lying on a chair wearing only her pajamas. She was frozen. John says that when he approached her, he was sure that she was dead — her lips were blue and she was ice cold to the touch.
7. A Miracle
Incredibly, John’s owner wasn’t dead. She was, however, very much at risk of freezing to death. Officer Gonzalez radioed in for the assistance of another office and they managed to get her inside before she passed away. If John Boy hadn’t brought him to her door – she would have died.
6. The Press Conference
Once John Boy’s owner was confirmed safe and well, the story spread and everyone wanted to hear about it. Officer Gonzalez soon found himself talking to a press conference and all they wanted to know was whether the dog had been deliberately trying to catch the officer’s attention.
5. Modesty And Clarity
Office Gonzalez told reporters, “I believe at this point, yeah, he sure did. [John Boy] pointed me in the right direction.” He also modestly asked that the reporters refrain from referring to him as a hero. He was just doing his job. He’s a great police officer and human being.
4. A Lassie Moment?
Lassie was the canine star of TV shows and movies. She was famous for helping people in trouble. Officer Gonzalez couldn’t help but note the similarity, and said of John Boy, “I thought it was neat, it was kind of like a ‘Lassie’ moment.”
John Boy has been handsomely rewarded for his part in the events with doggie treats.
3. A Relative’s Tears
A little careful detective work soon tracked down the woman’s family members and when police broke the news to the lady’s daughter, she broke down in tears. She thought that her mother was dead and it was an emotionally grueling experience for her, as you can probably imagine.
2. A Cop’s Reward
Officer Gonzalez would soon meet the lady’s daughter as she visited the police station to thank him for his decency and kindness in person. She embraced him and burst into tears again with relief this time at meeting the person who saved her mother’s life one winter’s day.
1. A Hero’s Welcome
Of course, John Boy wasn’t forgotten by the family. He was given a hero’s welcome by the lady’s daughter when they were reunited. He also seems to have earned himself a place to stay forever and a day. John Boy’s days of adoption are far behind him now.
It’s something of a miracle when a treasured pet turns out to be more than a companion and saves someone’s life.
It’s not unusual for dogs to go over and above their normal call of duty to attract attention to their owner’s distress. It’s one of the many reasons that a dog makes for a great pet.
It’s also important to remember than John Boy came from an animal rescue shelter and that millions of dogs just like John Boy are looking for someone to take care of them every day. You never know, one day they may repay your kindness by saving your life.
