Hollywood is the first place to openly accept gay and lesbians. It was an unconventional place for unconventional people and ideas. It shocked the world but the LGBT community celebrated. But that was only the beginning.
Fast forward today, more and more celebrities are coming out of the closet and it is being celebrated. Same-sex marriage is also at an all-time high. It was considered as a milestone and a right to be exercised. Although it may not be everybody’s cup of tea, we can’t deny the rise of the LGBT community, not just in Hollywood but around the world. Dory has found her soul mate. The couple has been together for 11 years and married for eight years. Both have successful careers and is considered as one of Hollywood’s LGBT power couples.
But before finding each other, the Ally McBeal star Portia De Rossi had a series of relationships and including a marriage with Mel Metcalfe. Initially, Portia was skeptical about being openly gay due to professional reasons but she ultimately stepped out. Portia even legally changed her name to Portia Lee James DeGeneres. Ellen and Portia met backstage during an award’s function and the rest is history.
19. Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner
Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner may be one of the longest-lived same-sex relationships in Hollywood. The two met back in 1971 before it was even socially acceptable to come out and have been together ever since.
The couple had no formal coming out but has been open about their sexuality. In 2008, Lily said, “Everybody in the industry was certainly aware of my sexuality and of Jane…in interviews, I always reference Jane and talk about Jane, but they don’t always write about it.” It wasn’t only until December 2013 that Lily and Jane tied the knot in a private ceremony in Los Angeles after 42 years together.

The anchorman considered coming out to the public when the same-sex marriage became legal in New York in July 2011. In 2012, he came out because he didn’t want to give anyone the impression that he was ashamed of his sexuality. In 2014, the couple purchased the Rye House, a historic estate in Connecticut.

Annie Clark or better known by her stage name St. Vincent is a musician, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. She was a member of Sufjan Stevens’s touring band before forming her own band in 2006. In an interview with Rolling Stone whether she identified as gay or straight, St. Vincent replied, “I don’t think about those words. I believe in gender fluidity and sexual fluidity. I don’t really identify as anything. [. . .] I think you can fall in love with anybody. I don’t have anything to hide but I’d rather the emphasis be on music”.
The model and actress Cara Delevingne, on the other hand, is openly bisexual. In June 2015, she confirmed her relationship with the musician. After Vogue reported that Delevingne’s relationship was a “phase,” she shot back saying, “My sexuality is not a phase.” But after a year and a half of dating, the two called it quits.
15. Cynthia Nixon and Christine Marinoni
Cynthia Nixon is well-known for her portrayal of Miranda Hobbes where she won a 2004 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. From 1988 to 2003, Nixon was in a relationship with schoolteacher Danny Mozes. They have two children together, daughter Sam and son Charles Ezekiel.
In 2004, the actress started dating education activist Christine Marinoni and got engaged in 2009. In 2012, they tied the knot in New York city. In 2011, Christine Marinoni gave birth to a son. They are now happily married.

But after gay marriage became legal in England in March 2014, the couple tied the knot in Windsor, Berkshire, on the ninth anniversary of their civil partnership. They have two sons.

Before publicly coming out as a lesbian, Wanda Sykes was married to record producer Dave Hall from 1991 to 1998. In 2006, she dated French woman Alex Niedbalski. But it wasn’t until 2008 when she publicly came out as a lesbian while at a same-sex marriage rally in Las Vegas.
The couple tied the knot in 2008 and on April 2009 Alex gave birth to a pair of fraternal twins, daughter Olivia Lou and son Lucas Claude. Wanda only came out to her conservative mother Marion and father Harry when she was 40, who both initially had difficulty accepting her homosexuality. They declined to attend her wedding with Alex, which led to a brief period of estrangement but have since reconciled and are now proud grandparents to the couple’s children.

The former NSYNC boy band member shocked the world when he admitted that he was gay in a cover story for People magazine back in 2006. But before coming out, he had several relationships with women. He dated actress Danielle Fishel of TV’s Boy Meets World for a year until he called off the relationship. Lance continued to exclusively date women until he was 22.
After coming out, he dated several men until he met Michael Turchin in 2012. After a year and a half of dating, the couple got engaged in September 2013. In 2014, the two became the first gay couple to get married on an American television show. The couple is planning to have kids in the future.

Celebrity personal trainer Jillian Michaels said about her sexuality, “Let’s just say I believe in healthy love. If I fall in love with a woman, that’s awesome. Since 2009, Jillian has been in a relationship with talent manager Heidi Rhoades. They are engaged and have two children together. Frederick Douglas Rosser III or better known by his ring name Darren Young is a professional wrestler signed to WWE on the Raw brand and is a former one-time WWE Tag Team Champion.
Darren Young is the first WWE wrestler to come out as gay while still signed to a major promotion while other WWE wrestlers Pat Patterson, Chris Kanyon, and Orlando Jordan (bisexual) came out after either leaving the company or retiring. In an interview released in August 2013, he publicly discussed being gay. Darren has been with boyfriend Nick Villa since 2011.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson is best known for portraying Mitchell Pritchett on the sitcom Modern Family where he earned five nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
Jesse is openly gay and has been in a relationship with lawyer Justin Mikita for almost two years. In September 2012, Jesse announced their engagement and got married in New York in July 2013. In the process of coming out, Jesse said he had to tell his father three times, when he was 17, 19 and 21 and said “It’s a coming out process for them as well,” and takes time.
7. Kristen Stewart and Alicia Cargile
Kirsten Stewart started her acting career in 1999 with uncredited roles and a minor character appearance in several films. In 2002, she gained celebrity status for playing Jodie Foster’s daughter in the thriller Panic Room, which earned her a Young Artist Award nomination for Best Leading Actress in a Feature Film. She gained worldwide recognition in 2008 when she played the role of Bella Swan in The Twilight Saga film series.
Before coming out she was in a relationship with actors Michael Angarano and Robert Pattinson. In March 2016, French musician and actress Soko confirmed her relationship with Kirsten but the two split up after a few months of dating. In July 2016, she confirmed that she was in a relationship with visual effects producer Alicia Cargile. She even says that she is truly in love with Alicia, “Finally, I can feel again.”

Jim Parsons is known for playing Sheldon Cooper in the sitcom The Big Bang Theory. He received several awards for his performance, including four Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series Musical or Comedy.
On May 2012, an article in The New York Times wrote that Parsons is gay and had been in a relationship for the last ten years with a partner, art director Todd Spiewak. Jim described their relationship “an act of love, coffee in the morning, going to work, washing the clothes, taking the dogs out—a regular life, boring love”.

Ricky Martin began his career at age twelve with the all-boy pop group Menudo. He then released Livin’ la Vida Loca which helped him gain worldwide success and is considered as the song that started the Latin pop explosion of 1999 and made the transition easier for other Spanish-speaking artists to move into the English-speaking market.
Before coming out of the closet, Ricky had been in an on-off relationship with Mexican TV host Rebecca de Alba for more than 14 years. But in March 2010, he publicly acknowledged his homosexuality saying, “I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am.” Since coming out, he had been in a series of relationships. In April 2016, he started dating Syrian Swedish painter Jwan Yosef.
4. Ellen Page and Samantha Thomas
Ellen Page is a Canadian actress and started with roles in Canadian television shows. In 2007, she starred in her breakthrough role Juno where she received several nominations and awards.
In February 2014, Ellen came out as gay during a speech at the Human Rights Campaign’s “Time to Thrive” conference in Las Vegas. She was included as part of The Advocate‘s annual “40 Under 40” list. After coming out, Ellen confirmed that she is in a relationship with artist and surfer Samantha Thomas and have been together since.
3. Amber Heard and Tasya Van Ree
Amber Heard made her film debut in 2004 in the sports drama Friday Night Lights, starring Billy Bob Thornton. She then had other minor roles in other films. She appeared in her first leading role in All the Boys Love Mandy Lane but her breakthrough came in 2008 with roles in Never Back Down and Pineapple Express.
Amber publicly came out 2010 at GLAAD’s 25th-anniversary event, and said, “I don’t label myself one way or another—I have had successful relationships with men and now a woman. I love who I love; it’s the person that matters.” She gained notoriety after a nasty divorce with Johnny Depp. But before marrying him, she dated photographer Tasya Van Ree. Amber is a proud bisexual has seriously dated both men and women.

Matt Bomer made his television debut in 2001 with Guiding Light and gained recognition with his recurring role in the television series Chuck.
Since 2011, Matt has been married to influential publicist Simon Halls. The couple has three sons, including a set of twins, via surrogacy. He first publicly declared that he was gay in 2012 when he thanked Simon and their children during an acceptance speech for his Steve Chase Humanitarian Award.
1. Brandi Carlile & Catherine Shepherd
Brandi Carlile is an alternative country and folk rock singer-songwriter. She dropped out of high school to pursue a music career, teaching herself piano and guitar. In 2002, she publicly came out as a lesbian and was one of the first country artists to do so. She later told the Los Angeles Times, “I don’t have to have a lot of formality around it … there were people before me who paved the way.”
In June 2012 she announced she was engaged to actor, writer, and director Catherine Shepherd. The couple got married in Boston, Massachusetts on September 2012. In June 2014 they welcomed their first child, a daughter named Evangeline Ruth.
There you have it. These are some of the LGBT Hollywood couples. There could be more that’s just waiting to come out of the closet. But despite the acceptance, there will still be people who won’t be able to easily accept these things. We’ll never know what other standards Hollywood could break but so far this one is already shaking the world.
