He was out working on a criminal case as he was walking through a secluded area and heard a baby’s cries. He moved to investigate and determined that the cries came from a nearby dumpster.
Hidden behind the dumpster was a newborn child. Michael rescued that child and 25 years later, their paths crossed again in very different circumstances. Here’s the whole story of the baby and the policeman who saved his life one November morning.
12. The Call
That November night was bitterly cold, and Michael Beulna had pulled a hard shift. He was sent out to investigate a stabbing that had occurred in the neighborhood a few days prior. He was flagged down by some concerned residents who’d heard a baby’s cries in the street.
11. Bad News
The baby was not well when Michael found him. The umbilical cord was still in place. The child was covered in dirt and slime. He was barely breathing. It was clear that the baby needed help and quickly. Michael rushed him to hospital and on the way gave the baby a name – Adam.
10. Happy And Healthy
Michael Buelna’s intervention was perfect timing for little Adam. The hospital quickly managed to treat Adam’s plight and soon he was happy and healthy again. He weighed just four pounds when they placed him on the scales, but there was a bigger problem in Adam’s future – his parents did not want him.
9. Great News
Many unwanted children find themselves stuck inside a foster system for years, but Adam was lucky. While Officer Buelna had been considering adopting the boy, another set of parents, Elizabeth Barton and Daniel Fernandez, came forward and swiftly adopted Adam – though they changed his name to Robin at this point.
8. Childhood And Truth
Robin’s adoption went well. His new family was kind and loving, and they raised him well and took exceptionally good care of him. However, at the back of the couple’s minds was always the question of how and when they would explain Robin’s life story to him.
7. Late Delivery
Robin was 24 years old when the couple finally decided that he was ready to learn the truth. They explained that he’d been abandoned and might have died had the officer not come along and rescued him. Robin decided at this point that he wanted to meet his savior.
6. Leaving The Force
Michael Buelna had grown up a little himself over those 25 years, of course. He’d gone from a young policeman to a retired officer, in fact. However, he had never forgotten the boy that he’d saved and he often wondered how things had turned out for Adam/Robin.
Robin’s parents reached out to Michael through the police force and they put them in touch and Michael was overjoyed to meet up with them. As you can see, the reunion was a joyous one and it was there Michael shared an incredible secret with Robin. You won’t believe what it was.
4. Michael Had Been An Abandoned Child Too!
Michael explained that he’d been abandoned by his own parents when he was very young. He’d been forced into the system and had had a difficult childhood. Robin told him how grateful he was for all that Michael had done for him and they had a tearful embrace.
3. A Surprise Twist
Robin told Michael that he didn’t blame his mother for what she had done. He said he was sure it was because she was desperate and hadn’t known what to do and that he would like to find out about his birth parents if possible. Michael began to hunt for them and just a few months later, he got a clue.
2. Sabrina Diaz
Sabrina Diaz was Robin’s mother. She’d had a hard life and her story was not pleasant. She’d served time for attempted murder and had regularly been charged with child endangerment. Robin still decided to go ahead and speak to her on the phone to give himself closure.
While Robin and Sabrina would not become close, reaching out to Sabrina led Robin to more of his family and they were reunited in a tearful and happy reunion a few weeks later. Robin is still thankful for everything that has happened to him, both the good and the bad.
Robin and Michael have developed a close friendship born out of the heroic rescue of a baby 25 years ago. Michael says Robin has turned out to be a fine young man and he expects him to go on to great things.
However, it’s worth noting that Robin’s situation is not unique. Sadly, each and every year babies are abandoned all over the country. If you hear a baby’s cries when you are outside – please investigate or contact local emergency services. You might just save a life if you do. Cold weather, particularly, can kill very quickly.
