Construction workers usually have a pretty simple job. It’s hard work, but often times they know exactly what needs to be done so not much exciting happens. But when it does, it can be really exciting! Building new projects often requires digging around some land that might not have been touched before. Everyone knows that if you dig deep enough, you’re bound to find something interesting. Well, that was definitely the case for these construction workers who were able to dig up a 150-year-old secret! Click ahead to find out what exactly they found. You won’t believe it!
#18 It Was Just A Normal Day On The Job
It was May of 2016 when Boston construction workers were going about their average day of building. But out of nowhere, they made an astonishing discovery they wouldn’t believe could possibly be located on the site they were building. It was a rare discovery that caused quite the excitement around the construction site. You won’t believe what they found…
#17 This Was The Most Priceless Thing On The Site
The location they were building on was on the waterfront. The area was home to plenty of fancy restaurants and high-rise condos. Billions of dollars have been invested in creating such a luxurious area so there was plenty of construction going on. But no money could have been spent to find what those construction workers found that day.
#16 Skanska Is The Company
The company hired to do the project is Skanska. It’s the company responsible for other commercial development projects, such as The World Trade Center Transportation Hub. They are reportedly the fifth largest construction company in the country. Their discovery might have helped set them ahead of others just a bit as you will see on the next slides!
#15 The Building Is For Offices
For this particular project, construction workers were set to build a 17-story office building. It is going to be within walking distance to the Seaport District. Although the project was just for another very typically average office building, the discovery below the site will definitely help add to the uniqueness and individuality of the building for its lifetime.
#14 Everything Stopped
When you’re the fifth largest company in the country, you can’t really just stop construction whenever you want. You need to be sure to constantly work to meet and make deadlines. However, when construction workers made such an incredible discovery, they took it upon themselves to be sure to halt construction and really explore just what they found.
#13 The Experts Were Called
One Skanska executive told the news that although throughout his time at the company, he’s discovered his fair share of interesting things. But this discovery was so unique that they felt it definitely necessary to call in experts to help the crew discover just how such a unique discovery made its way to this particular construction site.
#12 It Was A Shipwreck
It wasn’t just one small thing that workers found that day, but an entire ship that had wrecked on the shore! Imagine just going about your day and trying to build a building when instead you discover an entire ship preserved beneath the site! How long had it been sitting there? How had it gotten there in the first place? The workers were dying to know, but they’d soon find out.
#11 They Had To Work Quick
Once archaeologists made it to the scene, they knew that they had to work as quickly as possible. This wasn’t just any ordinary discovery that they could pick up and take to a safe spot to explore further. It was a very delicate discovery that they had to keep where it was and learn as much as they could about the discovery until construction had to resume. Would they get what information they needed?
#10 It Was A Puzzle
The explorers began by taking photos of each of the parts of the ship. They could only discover one section at a time, not sure what possible pieces they might be missing. They had to basically rebuild the ship as best as they could, as they were only able to find one section at a time. But they are experts and weren’t ready to just give up on the discovery quite yet.
#9 They Found A Solution
The discovery was on such a large site that the workers were having trouble getting what they could from the shipwreck. In order to make sure they would have what they needed to explore the wreck, they called in experts from Cambridge to take a 3D scan of the ship. This way they would be able to examine it further while appeasing pressures from executives of the construction company.
#8 Now They Have A Record
Once construction is completed, the experts will still be able to have a record of the ship through their 3D scanned image. They were also able to grab a few artifacts as well before the crew continued to build. Once the construction is over, the wreck will probably be a part of a public display in order to show the history of the wreck. Click through to see what the artifacts are!
#7 Plenty Of Interesting Artifacts
A lot of the artifacts from the ship had been lost either in the wreck or throughout history. However, they were able to uncover just a few interesting pieces that they would eventually be able to display. Among these interesting artifact discoveries were cutlery, dishes, building equipment, and broken ceramic vessels. There was another reason that they couldn’t find too many artifacts.
#6 There Had Been A Fire!
Archaeologists were able to discover that the top half of the ship had actually been lost in a fire! Only the bottom of the ship had survived throughout history. It makes sense, then, why the ship might have wrecked in the first place! There was still a lot left to discover about the purpose of the ship, however.
#5 It Was From The Mid 19th Century
On the ship, they were able to discover several loose nails. At first, that might seem like a small discovery, but that was something that was actually able to help date the ship! Because of the shape of the nails, archaeologists assumed that the ship came from the mid to late 19th century. But what was the purpose of the ship?
#4 It Was Likely For Cargo
Aside from just a bunch of nails that they had found within the shipwreck under the construction site, experts discovered other things that led them to believe it could have been a cargo ship. They found many barrels of abandoned lime. Lime was primarily used to help mix concrete as well as produce paper, so it was possible it was a ship carrying construction materials.
#3 Rockland Was A Clue
They also discovered a lid that had the name “Rockland” on it. Rockland is a city in Maine. At one point, it was known for it’s thriving lime business, so the ship was probably on its way from Maine to Boston. Around the time the shipwrecked, Boston was experiencing a construction boom. Unfortunately, the ship was never able to be a part of that. But why was it discovered so far from shore?
#2 The Site Was A Landfill
The shipwreck had actually been found an entire quarter mile from shore. Why had the ship made it so far when it had obviously crashed? Many believe that it was because the site that the ship was found on was a land ill, so the ship had actually been moved. It was assumed it had crashed after catching on fire.
#1 A Coincidental Discovery
It was a very coincidental situation that the shipwreck of a construction ship had been found on an actual construction site! The discovery was definitely a special one. The experts hope that once they are finished with construction, they’ll be able to have a public display of the boat to honor the history of Boston’s construction.
This discovery was truly something unique. There are still so many things we don’t know about the discovery that we may never know! Who was the captain of the ship? What exactly caused the fire? Was it on its way to help build something that never had the chance to be constructed? How much money was lost at the time? That’s the frustrating part about history, there are so many things we may never know. That’s also one of the best parts about discoveries like these, though. We won’t be able to know all the answers but we’ll never give up trying to put all the pieces together. Discoveries like these are just one of many that we’ll find throughout our own history.
