Creepy And Mysterious Photos That Will Give You Nightmares

creepy-scary-photosWhat scares you the most? The dark? Death? Creepy shadows in the dark? Killer clowns? Believe it or not, there are far creepier things than those. Just like these ones on our list.

These are real-life photos so don’t say we didn’t warn you. The back-stories that go with it are even more interesting. You’ll never guess these things could actually happen in real-life. They’re like things that could only happen in movies and that’s even scarier.

But if you’re brave enough to face your fears, then go ahead and check our list of Creepy Photos That Will Give You Nightmares. Just a tip, though, better check these photos during daytime or your nightmares might give you a heart attack. Also, don’t forget to look behind you, you’ll never know who’s watching.

1. Killer Clown
killer-clown

Clowns are usually comic performers who usually use slapstick or mime comedy style to entertain their audience. They are usually seen in circus or kids’ birthday parties. Way to go to destroy childhood memories by twisting clowns’ playful nature to that of evil and dark humor. But there are some people who are irrationally scared of clowns. That’s a different story.

The clown photo above is an actual person named John Wayne Gacy, Jr. He is also known as Pogo the Clown. But underneath the colorful costume, he is a serial killer and rapist who sexually assaulted and murdered at least 33 teenage boys and young men between 1972 and 1978 in Cook County, Illinois.

He would disguise himself as Pogo the Clown and trap his victims to this address by force or deception. A clown at day and killer at night. I guess I’ll have a hard time trusting clowns from now on.

2.  Cannibal Killer

cannibal-killer

If you cross paths with this guy on the streets at night, what would you do? He definitely doesn’t look friendly and this is an exemption to the saying, ‘don’t judge a book by its cover.’

This guys name is Joe Metheny and is nicknamed the Cannibal Killer. Back in 1976, he admitted to murdering at least 8 people. In a police confession, he said, “My murder rampage started out as revenge but ended up as a passion for the taste of blood and the overwhelming sense of power one gets for taking the life of another.”

After chopping his victims bodies’ he froze them and added the human meat to his open-pit beef stand. He said, “I cut the meat up and put it in some Tupperware bowls then put it in a freezer. I opened up a little open-pit beef stand. I had real roast beef and pork sandwiches. They were very good. The human body taste was very similar to pork. If you mix it together no one can tell the difference.” Creepy and disgusting.

3. Alcatraz Ghost

haunted-alcatraz

Alcatraz Island and Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary have been named as one of the most haunted places in America and the most haunted prison in the country.

The Native Americans have claimed to encounter evil spirits on the island long before the prison was built. And famous writer Mark Twain documented the eerie atmosphere of the island after visiting it as “being as cold as winter, even in the summer months.” Even prisoners, rangers, and visitors have reported a wide range of suspected paranormal activity on Alcatraz.

Just like this British couple who had an encounter while visiting the island. Sheila Walsh took a photo of a visitation block window where there was a figure of a woman, dressed in what looked to be the 1930s or 40s clothing and hairstyle. The woman can be seen staring directly through the window at the camera from inside the inmates’ visitation waiting room. On the left is what the window is supposed to look like. Be careful of the photos you take, you’ll never know who could appear in them.

4. Post-Mortem Photoshootpost-mortem-photoshoot

Believe it or not, this is an actual photo of a dead boy. Yes, post-mortem photography was a thing back in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, during the Victorian era. It was a normal part of the American and European culture.

The photographers were hired by grieving families and the postmortem photographs not only helped in the grieving process but often represented the only visual remembrance of the deceased and the photograph was considered one of the family’s most precious possessions.

Just imagine how challenging it was since there was no photoshop back then and the Department of Health would definitely freak out. Good thing the practice became obsolete.

5. Last Photo

regina-kay-walters-scary

How would you feel knowing that you’re living your last moment and breathing your last breath? Scared as hell, right? That could be how this girl probably felt.

This is the last known photo of 14-year-old Regina Kay Walters before she was murdered. The photo was taken by her murderer, Robert Ben Rhoades, a serial killer, and rapist. He even cut her hair, made her wear a black dress and heels before killing her. Sick.

Robert Ben Rhoades was a truck driver who had a torture chamber in the back of the 18-wheeler truck that he drives. The photo was taken in an abandoned Illinois barn. He is believed to have tortured, raped, and killed more than 50 women.

6. Demon Face

edward-mordrake

Edward Mordrake was an interesting English nobleman not because he was an heir to a great aristocracy but because he was said to be cursed with a terrible deformity, a second face on the back of his head. The second face could not see nor eat nor speak out loud but was said to “smile while Mordrake was happy” and “sneer while Mordrake was weeping”.

According to stories, this “devil twin” possessed a kind of hateful intelligence. He  repeatedly begged doctors to have his “demon face” removed, claiming that it never slept and whispered things that “one would only speak about in hell” at night, but no doctor would attempt it.

At the age of 23, he committed suicide leaving behind instructions that the demon face should be destroyed before his burial, “lest it continues its dreadful whisperings in my grave.” Fact or fiction? You be the judge.

7. The Green Man

green-man

Believe it or not, this is an actual photo of a person. This man’s name is Raymond Robinson. He wasn’t born that way, but his disfigurement was caused by a severe childhood electrical accident. Since his disfigurement was so terrifying he could only afford to go out for walks at night so people won’t be scared. When other people began to see him walking in the woods near the tunnel, they dubbed him as “The Green Man” or “Charlie No-Face.”

He became an instant urban legend and parents would tell their kids about him in the hopes of scaring them from going out at night. Most people were shocked to discover he was a real person who was very much liked and respected by family and neighbors.  He was actually a lonely man who just wanted someone to talk to.

8. The Loveland Frogman

loveland-frogmanThe Loveland Frogman story has been going around for a long time now. It started way back in the 70’s and told of a legendary creature inhabiting the Little Miami River. Two different police officers spotted the Frogman on two different nights in March of 1972 which was the first and last reported sighting.

It wasn’t until recently while a couple was playing Pokemon Go nearby when they spotted the creature and immediately snapped a photo of it. Then that night of fun quickly turned into a chilling tale of horror.

“We saw a huge frog near the water,” the witness wrote in an email. “Not in the game, this was an actual giant frog. Then the thing stood up and walked on its hind legs. I realize this sounds crazy, but I swear on my grandmother’s grave this is the truth,” he wrote. “The frog stood about 4 feet tall.”

9. Monsters Inside Me

filarial-worm

This photo is every person’s nightmare. Who wouldn’t freak out when you see there’s a worm coming out of you. It doesn’t just send chills down your spine but it makes your skin crawl of disgust. But this thing can actually happen.

The condition is called filariasis. It is a parasitic disease caused by an infection with roundworms. These are spread by blood-feeding black flies and mosquitoes. They are extremely known to cause what’s commonly called as “River Blindness.”

These parasites can also travel through the lymphatic system and can cause elephantiasis. A condition where the legs grow extremely large because of the parasite’s infestation.

10. The Aging Doll
the-aged-doll

Dolls are every little girls’ dream toy. They some in different shapes, sizes, and appearance. But this specific doll is terrifyingly different from the others. We all know that dolls are made of plastic or other non-decomposing materials so they’re not supposed to “age”.

A family bought their little girl an ordinary doll (or so they thought) and played with it until she grew old for it. As usual, unused things are stored in the attic until it collected dust. Then the family decided to throw out some old things when they stumbled on the doll.

They weren’t able to immediately recognize the thing because it looked like a different creature but the clothes remained the same. The doll aged just like a human being with all the wrinkles and folds in the right places. It’s eyes even looks like it’s asking for help. It looked like some paranormal activity was happening. The terrified family gave the doll away and never saw it again.

11. Blanche Monnier
blanche-monnier

Believe it or not, the woman in this photo is an actual person. Her name is Blanche Monnier, often known in France as la Séquestrée de Poitiers, who lived in Poitiers, France.

She was kept captive by her mother for 25 years without daylight in a padlocked, shuttered room where she was forced to live half starved among pests, rats, human excrement, and filth.

Before she was locked up as a captive she set her heart on marrying a lawyer who was not to her mother’s liking. Her disapproving mother locked her in a tiny room, where she was imprisoned.

Her pitiful condition was discovered on May 23, 1901, after the Paris Attorney General received an anonymous letter saying that a woman was being held captive in a home located on “21 rue de la Visitation” street in a wealthy neighborhood of Poitiers, France where the Monnier’s lived.

12. Mr. Curly Don’t Eat My Brain
leech-inside-the-brain

Leeches are tiny blood sucking creatures from your nightmares. They’re like a mindless vampire that will suck on any living thing with blood. Just ask Daniela Liverani.

She’s just a typical, healthy teenage girl who was enjoying her life when all of a sudden she started getting nosebleeds. She brushed it off and linked it to her previous motorcycle accident. She thought that the accident caused a blood clot to form but it wasn’t until the “clot” started to crawl! It turned out that the clot was a three-inch leech.

She believed it crawled up her nose when she was traveling back in South East Asia a month ago. She was probably having too much fun to notice it crawl inside her nose and named it Mr. Curly.

13. Botfly

botfly-bite

Just looking at the photo is enough to make your stomach turn. It looks like there were berries stuck under his skin. It doesn’t even look like a person’s skin.

The creatures responsible for this nightmare are called botflies. They are from the family of flies and their larvae are internal parasites of mammals. Some species grow in the host’s flesh and others within the gut. The human botfly is the only species of bot fly known to parasitize humans routinely.

These creatures lay their eggs underneath your skin and use your body as a source of nourishment and their temporary home until they are fully mature to push their way out. Botflies aren’t picky eaters. But you will be after seeing this.

14. King Of Plastic Surgery

walter-yeo

Walter Yeo was an English sailor during World War I, who is believed to have been one of the first people to benefit from an advanced plastic surgery technique during its time.

Walter was wounded during the Battle of Jutland, on May 1916, while manning the guns aboard the battleship HMS Warspite. He obtained extreme facial injuries, including the loss of upper and lower eyelids. His face looked like it was decaying due to the severity of the injuries.

He was treated by Sir Harold Gillies, the first man to transfer skin from undamaged areas on the body. Walter Yeo is thought to have been one of the first patients to be treated with this newly developed technique; a form of skin transplantation called a ‘tubed pedicle’ flap.

15. Evil Doll

mandy-the-doll

Here’s another creepy doll on our list. Mandy the doll is a 91-year-old antique doll made in Germany between 1910 and 1920. It has a cracked face and sinister looking smile that will send chills down your spine.

Mandy the doll was donated to Quesnel & District Museum in Canada in 1991 and has been terrorizing the place ever since. It was given to the museum by an anonymous donor who claimed she couldn’t handle the doll in her home any longer due to some very strange events. She said she would hear a crying baby in the basement only to find the doll and an open window.

Since being donated people in the museum would complain about the battery from their devices being drained while near Mandy. Some people say she blinks at them and often times Mandy has been known to move around on her own to different display cases.

16. Ghost Passenger

ghost-passsenger

Ghosts in photos are quite popular because such entities ignite our curiosity or scare the hell out of us. Just like this vintage photo. It may look like an ordinary photo of two people inside a car but the backseat passenger is actually a ghost.

This photo was taken in 1959 when Mabel Chinnery was visiting the grave of her mother in a British cemetery. She then took a picture of her husband, who was waiting alone in the car. It wasn’t until the film was developed that they realized her husband hadn’t been waiting alone in the car after all. The photo shows a person wearing glasses sitting in the back seat. It’s so clear light can even be seen reflecting off her glasses. Mrs. Chinnery immediately recognized the figure as being her mother, the mother whose grave they had just visited.

17. Ghost With Axe

ghost-with-axe

Here’s another paranormal encounter. Seeing a ghost is scary enough but when it’s holding an ax it brings scary to a whole new level. No the man on the photo isn’t trick or treating, it’s a ghost.

The place was an old military vessel that was being broken down for scrap was getting prepared for inspection. The man, calling himself Stevgoldhound, “Last month we came into dry dock to carry out refit and repairs. Next to us was an old Military frigate being broken down for scrap. Once all the sensitive stuff had been removed, the dock workers were free to go on.”

“The dock foreman, ‘John’ went on board first with a camera to take pictures of work areas. He later sent all of the pics to his boss, who upon seeing this one, called John straight away asking ‘Who is the guy with the ax at the edge of the camera flash?’  John had no idea. He never saw anyone.”

“Due to the fact that it was a military vessel, the police were called. A search was carried out but no one was found. There was one way on and off the ship, and that was by a gangway covered by CCTV.”

18. Underwater Humanoid Creature

underwater-humanoid-creature

These gigantic humanoid underwater creatures have been spotted in the deep icy waters of Antartica. Over the past couple of years, this photo has been circulating around Japan and the Japanese call these creatures Ninjen, a Japanese word meaning human.

Multiple sightings by crew members of government-owned whale research ships describe the creatures as white in color with an estimated length of 20 to 30 meters. It has a human-like shape, often with legs, arms, and even five-fingered hands. Sometimes it has fins instead of legs, like a mermaid. The only visible facial features are the eyes and mouth.

19. Two Faced Doll

two-faced-doll

Why do vintage dolls have to be creepy? We’re pretty sure they’re a child’s play thing or maybe children back then had a different standard. Or maybe the toy manufacturers were just clueless.

Just like this two-faced Asian inspired doll that was created back in the 1920s. During that time, these Jekyll and Hyde like dolls were all the rage. We’re not sure why and we question why? It was like a bipolar doll with an evil side.

20. Creepy Stalker

creepy-stalker

Why do old photos look so creepy? Even the children in the photo look creepy. It gives me the chills.

These innocent looking children don’t seem too happy to have their photo taken. Why? We’ll never know. But what makes this photo even creepier is the man who photobombed these kids. He looks like he’s up to no good. Even with his face all blurred we can see the malevolent smirk in his face.

21. Catacombs of Paris

catacombs-of-paris

Paris is a top tourist destination and millions of people fly to see the amazing city. But underneath all the glamor, the city hides something devious.

The Catacombs of Paris is an underground burial chamber which holds the remains of ore than six million people. Only a few  make the time to visit the city of light’s dark corners. It’s probably obvious why. Down in the catacombs, you will find the skulls and other bones of the six million people. It has also been called “The World’s Largest Grave” due the number of remains buried.

Before they were the catacombs, these 13th-century tunnels were quarries for limestone. In time, the limestones were exhausted so the tunnels were left abandoned. The solution? Use them as graves. Beginning the 18th century, the tunnels began functioning as underground cemeteries and, by the 19th century, they became a popular tourist attraction.

22. Demon Monkey

demon-monkey

Well, we’re not really sure if it’s a demon monkey but it sure looks like one. We’re not even sure if it’s a monkey which makes it all the more creepy.

Japan’s museums and Buddhist temples are home to many eccentric creatures and things. The Zengyoji temple in the city of Kanazawa is no exemption. It is home to this three-faced creature. Tale has it that a resident priest discovered the mummy in a temple storage chamber in the early 18th century. Nobody knows where the demon head came from, nor how or why it ended up in storage. The mummified head has two overlapping faces up front, with another one (resembling that of a kappa) situated in back. The temple puts the head on public display each year around the spring equinox.

23. Jonestown Massacre

jonestown-massacre

On November 18, 1978, Peoples Temple of the Disciples of Christ leader Jim Jones instructed all members living in the Jonestown, Guyana compound to commit an act of “revolutionary suicide,” by drinking poisoned punch. In all, 918 people died that day and 276 of whom were children.

Jim Jones, on the other hand, died from a single gunshot wound to the head, but it is unclear whether or not he did this himself. Only a handful or so people survived, either by escaping into the jungle or hiding somewhere in the compound.

We don’t know what was going through Jim Jones’ head. But he’s clearly out of his mind.

24. Real-Life Exorcism

exorcism

Anneliese Michel was a German woman who underwent Catholic exorcism in 1975 and died the next year, in 1976. She was a shy and quiet girl. When she was 16-years-old she  experienced an epileptic seizure and was diagnosed with temporal lobe epilepsy. Her mental health deteriorated rapidly after that.

Soon, Anneliese started experiencing devilish hallucinations while praying. She also started to hear voices, which told her that she was damned. She was diagnosed as depressed and treated at a psychiatric hospital. Her condition worsened, despite medication, and she became suicidal. Then her family became convinced she was possessed by demons and requested an exorcism to a Catholic priest. A series of brutal, sometimes violent, exorcisms rites were performed on her for 10 months that eventually killed her.

After her death, Anneliese’s parents and the two priests were found guilty of negligent homicide and were sentenced to six months in jail (reduced to three years of probation), and a fine. Her symptoms have since been compared with those of schizophrenia, and they may have responded to treatment.

25. Serial Killershirley-ann-bridgeford

The woman on this photo is Shirley Ann Bridgeford. She was one of the victims of Harvey Murray Glatman, a serial killer active during the late 1950s. He was given the nickname as “The Lonely Hearts Killer” and “The Glamour Girl Slayer”. He would use several aliases, posing as a professional photographer to lure his victims with the promise of a modeling career. After luring them in, he then assaulted and killed them all while taking photos.

Harvey Glatman already showed antisocial behavior and sadomasochistic sexual tendencies from an early age. At the age of 12, his parents noticed he had a red, swollen neck. He narrated being in the bathtub, placing a rope around his neck, running it through the tub drain, and pulling it tight against his neck, “achieving some kind of pleasure from this act.” His mother took him to the family physician and was told he “would grow out of it.” Unfortunately, he didn’t.

26. On-Camera Suicide

robert-budd-dwyer

This photo is not a still image from a movie. It’s an actual photo of a person committing suicide live on camera. This man’s name is Robert Budd Dwyer, an American politician in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He served as the 30th Treasurer of Pennsylvania from January 1981 until his death.

On January 22, 1987, the politician called for a news conference in the Pennsylvania state capitol of Harrisburg where he shot himself in front of the gathered reporters with a .357 Magnum revolver. His suicide was broadcast later that day to a wide television audience across Pennsylvania.

In 1986, he was convicted of receiving a bribe and was scheduled to be sentenced on those charges on January 23, 1987, the day after his suicide.

27. Burned Alive

burned-alive

Nobody ever benefits from war. Innocent lives, properties, and livelihood are lost for no good reason. Just like this photo of an Iraqi soldier who was burned alive while trying to escape.

This chilling and controversial photo was taken just before a ceasefire officially ended Operation Desert Storm. Many news outlets chose not to publish the photo but photographer Kenneth Jarecke was surprised by the decision, as he felt the picture could help put a human face on a war.

Of the man in the photo, he said “He was fighting to save his life to the very end, till he was completely burned up. He was trying to get out of that truck. If I don’t photograph this, people like my mom will think war is what they see on T.V.”

28. Tragedy Caught On Cam

tragedy

Looking at the photo, it seemed like an ordinary day at the Wuhan Yangtze River bridge in China. But when you look closely, you can see a person free falling from the side of the bridge. It was a perfectly timed photo.

The backstory on this was that there were actually two people who jumped off the bridge. A young couple commited suicide at the same time. The guy jumped first and the girl followed next as seen in the photo.

When police investigated, the guy was a 20-year-old migrant worker named as Liu Han who was struggling to make a living, according to his relatives. The reason for his suicide was probably about financial matters. The girl’s identity is still unknown.

29. Crazy Girlfriend

travis-alexander

Remember the murder of Travis Alexader? Travis was a salesman and was murdered by his ex-girlfriend, Jodi Ann Arias. He was murdered in his home and sustained multiple knife wounds, slit throat and a gunshot to the head. The murder and trial received widespread media attention in the United States and looked like a real-life soap opera.

Prior to his murder, Travis shared to one of his friends’ that Jodi his ex-girlfriend was stalking him. She was accessing his facebook and even slashing his tires. It looked like she wasn’t over him. Jodi is sentenced to life in state prison.

30. Rat King

rat-king

Rats are the least popular members of the animal kingdom. They are disgusting, terrifying and a pest.

Throughout history there have been occurences of the so-called ‘rat kings’. But these are not the type to walk around with a crown on. They are actually multiple rats all entwined into one giant, multi-limbed monster. As if a single rat isn’t disgusting enough.

Rat kings are made up of an unetermined number or rats who somehow get intertwined at their tails. This could be from dirt, blood, animal hair or feces, but the end result is that the rats become stuck together at their tails – permanently.

These rat kings do not die out, either – they will form one giant swirling mass of rat that lives as one, moving together, eating together and growing together. Historically, rat kings have been seen as a terrible omen related to death and disease.

Are you scared yet? Don’t say we didn’t warn you. These are real stories. It could be creepier but you’ll probably have a heart attack by then. Just think of your happy place and hopefully you’ll forget what you read.
