Beauty Through The Ages: What We Us...

FeaturedGirlsFashion can be one of the most important things in some people’s lives. Even those who don’t care about what they look like still have to buy shirts and pants to cover their bodies somehow! Fashion is a social construct; there is no right or wrong way to dress as long as you’re protecting yourself from natural elements like extreme cold or heat. Regardless, our culture is still obsessed with fashion trends and the way we look and have been for an extremely long time. Take a look back at how our beauty trends have changed all the way since the Renaissance Era!

#18 The Beginning

001--18-the-beginning-54221313cc314a81d798fb18e0d8bb74The Renaissance Era took place between the 1600’s and 1800’s. During this time, clothes weren’t always a necessity, as can be seen from many of the paintings of the time. Those who did wear clothes wore large puffy dresses and capes, just barely enough to cover their bodies. It wasn’t really about what you were wearing, it was more about whether you wanted to cover up or not. That’s not the only thing that was way different about this era!

#17 Woman Were Curvier

002--17-woman-were-curvier-2ef499c389914135f689269a5ef941d6There really wasn’t a standard body for women to have at the time. Many women in paintings were much curvier and not afraid to hide a little extra fat on their hips and thighs. Sometimes, a little extra chunk was a sign of wealth! There really wasn’t much body shaming, and all types of women’s bodies were embraced. You’ll see how things quickly changed.

#16 Victorian Era

Screenshot - 10_10_2016 , 4_13_12 p_mThe Victorian Era came right after the Renaissance Era around the 1800’s. This became a much more conservative time, and it was important to cover up due to religious purposes. Colors became a lot more muted and darker and the bright flashy capes were left behind. One of the most horrific trends appeared and was quite the opposite of the Renaissance era. Click ahead to see what it was!

#15 Women Need Small Waists!

004--15-women-need-small-waists--31fd43c0ad2b50f163558de2c5098324The Victorian Era was a time for tiny waists! Women would wear extremely tight corsets in order to cinch their waists and make them tinier. To some, it looked great, but many of the women dealt with a lot of pain to achieve this look. Corsets were pretty dangerous and could actually break women’s ribs! You know what they say. “Beauty is pain.”

#14 Roaring Twenties

eewfewfRight after the uptight Victorian Era came the Roaring Twenties! This was a time when people could finally embrace fashion again and not be afraid to show off their bodies! During prohibition, it was all about partying, and the fashion trends definitely showed this. The women were pretty happy about a new trend too! Go to the next slide to see what it was!

#13 Women Can Breathe Again!

006--13-women-can-breathe-again--352c8020fbbcd43d35bbd8926734abc6Everyone was back in good spirits after the end of the first world war, and the women celebrated by tossing those uncomfortable corsets and slipping right into the flapper dress, which was the big fashion trend of the time. Women also enjoyed wearing much flashier makeup and rocking short bobs as well!

#12 The Golden Age

007--12-the-golden-age-d110f5407a4f63d32949a955bb8f4293After the roaring 20s, people began shifting away from the party look and went for something a little more classic. The Golden Age refers to a time when Hollywood was getting to be the big beast that it is today. People opted for a more natural, classic look, and makeup and clothing were meant to stay slightly conservative while complimenting features well.

#11 Mid Centuries

008--11-mid-centuries-251530The Mid Centuries brought a slight change to the Golden Age, while still sticking close to the roots. Both World Wars were over and people were getting back into family life. Women were focused on being mothers and wives, and they dressed the part! It was all about being beautiful while still being a good mother and wife.

#10 Marilyn Monroe Shaped Views

009--10-marilyn-monroe-shaped-views-90d789c8e607f9eb4c5f168d4ccb8c28Despite going for a bit of a conservative look, it was still important for women to maintain a sense of sex in their fashion choices. Many women looked up to Marilyn Monroe, who rose to prominence during the mid-century. It was all about having perfect hair and makeup and just the right amount of sex appeal. A big change was about to come, though!

#9 Hippies Everywhere!

010--9-hippies-everywhere--251534The 1960’s brought a huge shift in this idea of beauty and went for a real natural look, not one achieved through makeup! Hippies were tired of being in nuclear families and were all about expressing their individuality. In the hippie community, there was no right or wrong way to dress, just as long as you didn’t look like you stepped out of Leave It To Beaver.

#8 Not Everyone Was A Hippie!

011--8-not-everyone-was-a-hippie--251536Although being a hippie was pretty big at the time, there were still many who cared about fashion trends. Those who went against the Earthy vibe opted for a different look, while still rejecting the conservative values of The Mid-Century. Women chose to wear short skirts and knee high boots and loved wearing mod looking makeup and hair.

#7 Disco Baby!

012--7-disco-baby--d7d1948f607e2fdbfe4d93bfed1b8327Right after the hippie and mod era came time for Disco! Disco was all about wearing fun and funky clothes! Unfortunately, for women, though, it was also a time to be thin again. Women were all about showing off their tiny figures and especially being tan! This was an era when we truly started to see people getting addicted to tanning beds.

#6 The 80’s!

013--6-the-80-s--251540The need to be thin sparked a big fashion trend in the 80’s. Women were watching exercising videos at home and decided to rock the spandex outside the house as well. Everyone chose tighter fitting spandex clothes and bright flashy colors were totally in around this time. But that’s not the only regrettable decision people in the 80’s decided to make! Click the next slide to see more embarrassing fashion trends!

#5 Bigger Is Still Better

014--5-bigger-is-still-better-251542Although everyone was more obsessed with tiny bodies, bigger was still better in the 80’s when it came to hair styles! It was all about the aqua net and making sure your hair stood tall above everyone else’s! Women loved big blowout styles and having huge curls in chunky piles on their heads.

#4 The Nineties Were Dark

015--4-the-nineties-were-dark-0caf56a5dac4cc550657b6b8136ae2deApparently, everyone decided they were sick of the bright colored spandex and instead chose to go for something a little grungier. The 90’s brought a grunge era, a time when everyone wanted to wear dark clothes and tons and tons of plaid. Women were still expected to be thin, but if you weren’t, you could just hide it under an oversized sweatshirt or flannel!

#3 Crazy Hair Isn’t Over Yet

016--3-crazy-hair-isn-t-over-yet-251546Just when we thought hair was wild in the 80’s, people were still experimenting with crazy styles in the 90’s. Women found new fashion icons on TV, most notably the cast of “Friends”. Men looked to boy bands to get the really cool look of frosted tips and spiky hair. The nineties don’t seem that long ago, but things still have changed!

#2 The New Millenium

017--2-the-new-millenium-95ee8049ddf7c9a121f41005840727e5The New Millenium is not only an end of an era, but it seems to be the end of many eras. Some people ditched the grunge look while others decided to stay true to it. The new millennium seems to be a time when people care less about popular trends and are more interested in creating unique and individual styles. Who knows what might be to come! Click the last slide to see what the future of fashion might look like!

#1 Today!

018--1-today--251550Nowadays style is all about being unique rather than looking like what’s in magazines. People definitely still follow what their favorite celebrities are wearing and some women still look to magazines to tell them what to wear. But many people are way less afraid to rock their own style than they were in times when women had to break their ribs to be thin.

A lot of things have changed since the Renaissance Era. People have gone from wearing nothing, to covering every inch of their body again in a matter of decades. Some people look back on what they wore and are mortified at the trends they used to rock. Others look to the past as inspiration for their style nowadays! Regardless of what you choose, it seems like we’re moving towards an era of individuality. People aren’t afraid to get their clothes from a thrift store which means department stores are closing. Perhaps we’ll fall back into a Renaissance Era where we won’t care what each other looks like anymore. Some people believe fashion is dying, but others think that things are finally just getting started.
