Very Adult Jokes That Made It Into Children’s Movies

Children’s movies can be wonderfully entertaining for the adults who accompany their kids to the cinema, or they can be a total snore-fest. Sometimes, what works for the little ones doesn’t work so well for the adults in the audience.

These movies, however, all tried to ensure that if the adults stayed on their mental toes (as it were), they would be rewarded with a few laughs especially designed for them.

In each of these 12 children’s films, there’s at least one very adult moment that made it past the censor and to the silver screen.

12. Mrs. Doubtfire

Robin Williams was really allowed a lot of rope in his classic performance as the nanny with a little extra in Mrs. Doubtfire. When “she” is talking to Pierce Brosnan’s character, she spouts on about “Rumple Foreskin” and “a bit of the old cunning linguistics.” Which is jolly naughty indeed.

11. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The line “She’s so hot I can feel my shell tightening.” could have been so innocent if it had just been delivered in the right way. Instead, it’s a purely sleazy come-on from a turtle, Michelangelo, to April (played by Megan Fox). The whole thing made us feel unclean.

10. Toy Story

This is more of a visual joke than a straight up wisecrack. Take a look at the bizarre combination of dolls sexy legs with a fishing rod. Worked it out yet? Yes, that’s right. She’s a hooker! Geddit? We do, and we’re glad that the kids watching it didn’t.

9. Space Jam

This joke is a thinly veiled reference to Michael Jordan’s off-court performances in the bedroom, when he’s asked by doctors about his “performance issues.” Really, couldn’t they have asked him about “playing with his balls” or “dunking it in the ring,” instead? Oops. Sorry, we didn’t mean to go there.

8. The Rescuers

This one probably wasn’t deliberate, but more of a prank played by someone in the studio. There’s a nude poster on the wall in this car chase in The Rescuers and that meant the recall of over 3 million videos sold, so that it could be edited out.

7. The Cat In The Hat

This might have been a little overboard. To be fair, it was a pretty crummy movie which failed to deliver on the Dr. Seuss message, but was there any need for Mike Myers to prance around with a garden implement calling it “a dirty hoe” and then start licking it? Yuck.

6. Robots

We kind of liked Robots’ sweet take on childbirth by having a baby delivered in a box that needs putting together by its parents. Though we weren’t as impressed by the wife telling her husband that “making the baby is the fun part” which felt a little too “nudge, nudge, wink, wink.”

5. Monsters Inc.

It’s not the jokes in Monsters Inc. that were wrong. It was that poster next to Sulley’s head in this scene. That’s not just a little bit wrong, it’s a whole new level of wrong. It can’t be unseen, though fortunately younger, innocent eyes probably won’t see what we see in it.

4. Madagascar

Do we have to spell everything out for you? Well, they certainly did in the kid’s smash hit Madagascar when the zebra finds himself being pursued by the lion intent on making him his dinner. The zebra cries “Sugar Honey Ice Tea!” so spell it out and you’ll see what we mean.

3. Shrek

Shrek is actually full of fairly smutty jokes which walk a fine line between “child-friendly” and “oh my!” But it’s the line when the giant castle is revealed and the owner is asked if he is “compensating for something” where things descend into pure smut of the schoolyard kind.

2. Toy Story 3

There are a ton of risque jokes throughout the Toy Story series, and we loved them for it. However, it was in Toy Story 3 when the whole thing stepped over the boundaries of good taste when Mr. Potato Head says, “No one takes my wife’s mouth but me!”

1. Aladdin And The King Of Thieves

This one went straight to video, which meant that Robin Williams was given plenty of room to play with. After all, if the critics won’t see it, why worry about it, right?

When an elephant takes a step forward, the genie says, “I thought the earth wasn’t supposed to move until the honeymoon.”

The good news is that apart from that peculiar surprise in The Rescuers, the vast majority of children wouldn’t know what these jokes were really about, and if they did, you’d have more to worry about than the innuendos these writers and animators snuck into their films.

What’s your favorite adult joke hidden in a children’s movie? Which ones have we missed? Is there a moment that you just can’t stop laughing at or can’t believe how cleverly an adult quip has been inserted into the script? Why not let us know about it below?
