Whether you’re a creationist, evolutionist, or whatever-ist, it’s hard to consider life as anything but an incredible miracle. There’s so much beauty in the world to admire and incredible things to experience.
With that being said, there’s a fair share of tragedy in the world as well. While some tragedy can remind us of the true value of life, it can also get us down. It’s a good exercise to remind ourselves of all the good in the world to help us get out of our funks.
The following photos are a great reminder of how amazing the human race is, and the truly incredible things that exist in this world.
#18 The Weeping Soldier
Even the most patriotic people will usually agree that war is never a good thing and should be an absolute last resort. Soldiers on the front lines might feel pride in protecting their countries, but with that pride likely comes a measure of resentment, anger, and fear. Everyone’s afraid to die, and soldiers face death on a more regular basis than most. This soldier clearly felt overcome with emotion as he was serving his country.
#17 Sharing A Meal With A Friend
The ability a person has to share is underrated, especially in a world where many act selfishly on a regular basis. This Buddhist monk is clearly operating on a higher level, and he recognizes the importance of sharing with his feline friend, the hungry tiger. This photo was captured at the Kanchanaburi in Thailand, also called “Tiger Temple.”
#16 The Eagle Huntress
Some 13-year-olds are just your ordinary teenagers, obsessed with texting, social media, and dating. Others, like Ashol Pan, are eagle huntresses from Mongolia. She’s no ordinary girl, in fact, her interests are very extraordinary. Instead of texting her friends or playing with dolls, she learns how to handle animals like large birds, foxes, and hares.
#15 Soldiers From North Korea Sharing A Laugh
When we think of North Korea, we usually picture some strange place with people completely unlike us. This picture serves as a beautiful reminder that even in the North Korean army, there are people just like us that enjoy life and love to laugh. It’s remarkable to consider that we share many similarities with people that are on an opposite side to us.
#14 A Child Of The Arbore Tribe In Ethiopia
Something about young children is mesmerizing. Perhaps it’s the pure innocence you can see clearly in their eyes or their fascination with life as they experience everything for the first time. This young boy from the Arbore Tribe in Ethiopia shows those qualities in spades, and it seems obvious that he’s brimming with pride of his tribe.
#13 Chhetri Woman
Traveling can be exhausting no matter the means of transportation. As revolutionary as the invention of flight was, even it can be a tiring experience. If you find ordinary means of travel tiring, consider the ordeal of traveling by foot through rocky peaks and valleys. This Chhetri woman was photographed while doing just that through the valley of Dhorpatan in Nepal.
#12 The Masai Warriors
Some people’s faces tell stories without them ever having to speak. The faces of these Masai warriors do exactly that. Just looking at the lines in their faces and their expressions tell us that they’ve experienced rich lives. Masai warriors wear red to advertise power and strength, but even the ordinary members in the community wear it as well.
#11 The Young Girl Who Survived
Surviving in harsh conditions is a challenge for anyone. Famous survivalists have made TV shows about how to survive in difficult locations, but they have years of experience and savvy behind them. This young girl had no such experience to speak of, yet she performed the amazing feat of surviving 11-days in the Siberian forest all alone.
#10 A Lord Of Death
The Mayan’s have some ancient traditions that might seem very foreign to us, even creepy. It’s hard not to look at this photo and feel a little uneasy. Interestingly enough, though, the tradition photographed here is actually honoring the goddess of fertility, and it has nothing to do with death. If you thought that was crazy, check out this next one…
#9 A Cormorant Fisherman
Hunting and gathering have been the means of feeding oneself and one’s family since the beginning of time. Not only do humans do it, but animals and birds do it as well. This man is following in the footsteps of generations before him as he fishes in the cormorants along the Li river in China.
#8 A Beautiful Geisha
One of the most wonderful things about traveling around the world is experiencing different cultures drastically different from our own. Japan is a very different place from anywhere in North America, and captured in this photo is an apprentice geisha in Kyoto. By now, she might even be finished with her apprenticeship and be a full-fledged geisha.
#7 Blind Albino Boys
Some photos really hold your attention, and this one is a perfect example of a picture that does just that. Being born an Albino is rare, but being born a blind Albino is even rarer. These blind Albino boys were photographed at a boarding school for the blind in West Bengal in India back in 2013.
#6 A Well Deserved Break
We all deserve a break every now and then, especially people that work exhausting, physical jobs. There’re not many jobs more tiring than being a gold miner, and these Costa Rican men are very familiar with exhaustion. Here they can be seen taking a brief lunch break before they head back to the mines to work.
#5 The Smiling Brothers
Family bonds are one of the strongest in the world, and anyone with a sibling knows that the relationship between two siblings is a unique one. When it’s a good relationship, there’s almost no one closer than your brother or sister. These two brothers in Pakistan fully demonstrate that sibling closeness and their smiles show that they’re happy when they’re together no matter what.
#4 Young Yezdidi Girl Carrying An Assault Rifle
Protecting one’s family is a priority that all of us hold dear. In dangerous times like these, it’s even more important to always be prepared. With threats like ISIS and local criminals, this young lady is very aware of the need to protect her family. She keeps an assault rifle close at hand while she and her family travel the roads, but she likely hopes to never have to use it.
#3 A Newborn With His Cousin
The next best relationship from siblings is that of cousins. The familial tie often means that we can have a closer friendship with our cousins than someone we’re not related to. This newly born 3-week-old with albinism seems to thoroughly enjoy his nap time with his cousin in Kinhasa, Congo. This next one is truley beautiful…
#2 Bhutan Monarchs
Most governments are more traditional these days as opposed to the old ways where family lines dictated who the next rulers would be. Apart from the royal family in England, there are very few monarchs that still govern. The two captured in this photo rule as king and queen of the Buddhist country Bhutan. You’ll love this last awe-inspiring photo…
#1 The Love Between A Mother And Daughter
Even in horrible situations, there are rays of light to be found. This photo of a mother and her 3-year-old daughter after a recent attack by the husband and father is truly saddening. Their faces have been burned with acid and their features have partially melted away, but despite it all, they still have each other. The love between them is apparent, even in a photograph.
No matter what tragedies befall the human race, there will always be lighter than there is darkness. Sometimes the difficulties we experience can seem overwhelming, but we only have to search a little harder to find the good that exists in the world.
It might take some work to focus on the good things in life, but we hope these photos serve as an excellent reminder of the beauty in the world.
