When we think of a Walmart store here in the USA or in Canada, they are normally pretty standard. Nothing too exciting happens and you just walk in, get your groceries and walk out. However, the same can’t be said about China, as you can buy some pretty strange things.
Here are 18 reasons why Walmart in China will give you nightmares. I still can’t get over why they sell #6…
Imagine walking through a Walmart and seeing this. Not only do these stores in China carry pieces and parts of a crocodile, they sell the whole thing! Right in the area next to the fish and other seafood is where you will find these beasts. I must say, though, the presentation of these crocodiles is fantastic. They are almost appetizing.
If you thought that was weird to see, check out this other underwater beast for sale…
17. Shark Heads
In America, we love all different kinds of seafood. From fish to clams to lobster, we eat it all. However, in China, they take that to a completely different level. They actually sell and eat shark heads, which is an incredibly scary sight to see a shark staring back at you from the shelf. Hey, seafood is seafood, but I don’t quite understand the logistics of getting the shark home with you.
As if sharks weren’t scary enough, you’ll certainly get freaked out by this next food…
16. Pig Faces
In the West, we go absolutely crazy over pork. Whether it be bacon or a nice juicy pork chop, we often have no problem eating pig. However, we don’t often buy and consume their faces which, as you can see, is something they do in China. Sure, pig faces could potentially taste good, but they look super freaky just hanging on the shelves like that.
15. Fox Meat
When it comes to eating wild animals, usually American’s don’t have a problem with that. But when it comes to animals such as fox, we often draw the line. But in China, you can see this is a very popular type of meat as people are lining up to get their hands on some. Also, I’m no health professional, but should all of those people just be barehanding the meat like that?
14. Chicken Feet
Now, chicken is something that we LOVE here in the West. It is probably the most popular meat and most people eat it a few times a week. However, the Chinese likely enjoy it even more than us, as they even eat the chicken feet, which few people do over here. The packaging of chicken feet out in the open like that probably wouldn’t go over as well here in the states.
If that would freak you out to see in your Walmart, then prepare yourself for this next one…
13. Dried Reptiles
When we go to Walmart to buy dried meat, it is usually in the form of beef jerky. But how would you like to step into Walmart and see things like Alligator, turtle, and even lizard meat on display for anyone to buy, take home and enjoy? At least they are very conscious of preservation!
12. Dried Squid
But not only does Chinese Walmart have dried meat on display, they also have dried squid. While eating squid isn’t that uncommon over here, we rarely if ever, see it sold like it is in China. However, squid is as common as burgers in China so they sell it everywhere.
11. Live Sea Creatures
While most stores in the USA will have things like lobsters and crab on display, they can’t touch the amount of different things offered in Chinese fish tanks. You can get eels or another interesting fish in almost every Chinese Walmart.
10. Sausage Bins
While buying sausage is very normal at every Walmart, few outside of China simply place a pile of sausage in a bin for people to buy. Now I’m not sure, but this doesn’t look very sanitary, but people still flock to these bins to buy sausage.
9. Horse Milk
While cows are responsible for most of the milk out there, there are others who can make milk as well. One animal you may not know who can produce milk is the horse. And not only do they make milk, but you can even buy it in powdered form at Walmarts in China.
8. Eggs of Various Animals
When you are shopping for eggs in the West, your choices are pretty much limited to chicken eggs. But when you shop at Walmart in China, that is not the case at all. Frog eggs, fish eggs, large goose eggs and more can all be purchased with ease.
7. Meal Floss Donuts
We are used to most donuts being sweet, not savory. But in China, meat floss donuts are all the rage. These donuts have dried meat (think jerky chew) on top of them that surely give a flavor unique to anything we can find and buy over here.
6. Snickers and Batteries
While most of us here can identify both of the products in this package, we have never seen them sold together. Why these stores decide to sell two batteries in a plastic container with three snickers bars is foreign to us. But they’re a product, so there must be a demand for it.
5. Diet Water
While diet soda is all the rage in the west, there is a different kind of diet drink that is sold in China, and that is diet water. While water is literally calorie free, Chinese marketers thought they could trick people by offering diet water, and it seems to be working as it is still being sold.
4. Meat Water
While this may look like Vitamin Water, if you look closely, it most definitely isn’t that. This is advertised as meat in a bottle and is just as gross as it sounds. They come in various flavors such as bbq wings and pigs with wings.
3. Beef Granules
When you are in the mood for some snacks, few places are better than Walmart. They offer anything you can think of. But in China, they go beyond that as they offer hot and spicy beef granules. These are tiny individually packed beef bites, which look more like candy than meat.
2. Rice Bins
Never in my life have I seen so much rice. As you probably know, rice is an incredibly important staple in the Chinese lifestyle and as a result, you can find bins of rice all over the place. While we, of course, sell rice here too, not in the fashion that they do in China.
1. Teeny Tiny Watermelons
Out of all the things in this list, this has to be one of the coolest ones. Watermelons are normally one of the biggest fruits, but in China, you can get ones that are about the same size as the tip of your finger. These little melons make a great bite size snack.
So as you can see, they sell some truly freaky and amazing thing in Chinese Walmart. And while these things are unheard of in stores here, some of them are actually quite common in China. But either way, it is still quite shocking for us to see these 18 things about Chinese Walmart.
