18. Ronda’s Childhood
Ronda Rousey was born in Riverside County, California to her father Ron Rousey and mother AnnMaria De Mars. Her mother was an accomplished Judo fighter when she became the first American to win a World Judo Championship in 1984. Her ancestry is a beautiful mix of Afro-Venezuelan, English, and Polish.
17. Young Struggles
Until the age of six, Ronda had suffered through apraxia, a neurological speech disorder that prevented her from forming sentences. It was caused by the umbilical cord wrapping around her neck during childbirth. She began speech therapy at the age of three and was able to work through the terrible condition.
16. Morning Arm Bars With Mom
Ronda’s mother inspired her to start Judo training. She became well-known for her arm bars and she once admitted to an interviewer that her Judo champion mother would wake her up every morning by jumping on top of her and putting her in arm bars. Find out what her early fighting style was like in #15.
15. Early Career
At the beginning of her career, Ronda used a lot of strikes to set her opponent up to suffer the wrath of her judo skills. During her first few fights, her wins came by way of stoppage, and she was able to successfully land multiple jabs, knees, and overhand right hooks.
14. Trash Talking
Ronda is known for her excessive trash talking to her opponents before a big fight. She knows just what to say to instill fear into the hearts of those she faces. For example, she told Sarah Kaufman she would rip off her arm, throw it into her corner, and repeatedly pound her face to death.
13. She’s A Gamer
It might come as a surprise that Ronda is a habitual gamer when she wants to bring out her nerdy side and loves to play Pokemon. Her favorite Pokemon is Mew, and she will kick your butt inside the octagon or in Pokemon World. She even trained in a Pikachu costume once.

12. Ronda The Olympian
Ronda Rousey is also an Olympian, having represented the United States in Beijing, China as a Judo fighter. In 2008, she defeated Annett Boehm by Yuko and earned herself a bronze medal and became the first American in Olympics history to win a medal in Judo since it became an Olympic event in 1992.
11. Unemployed Bronze Medalist
After her Olympic hero’s welcome back home, Rousey found herself unemployed. She took a job at a 24-Hour Fitness in California and began to chart out of life’s course from that moment. She decided then and there that she would return to fighting and joined an MMA gym close by.
10. Fighting Style
As a judoka, Ronda Rousey will usually bring an opponent down to the ground using tosses and leg sweeps. At that time she will move in and claim her victory through strikes or submissions from the ground. Her opponents won’t be much safer if she happens to land the right knockout punch from her feet.
9. On The Ground
Ronda’s grappling and jiu-jitsu skills are quite notable, and she has claimed various victories using her arm bar. She has earned a couple of quick submission victories from incredible fighters Julia Budd and Sarah Kaufman. Other fighters such as Miesha Tate and Liz Carmouche have given her a run for her money. Read about her pre-fight ritual in #8.
8. Pre-Fight Workout
Ronda says there is nothing better than having sex before a fight. She explains that it’s a medical fact that if girls “have sex before a fight it raises your testosterone. If it’s available to me then I’m all for it but otherwise, I’m kind of out of luck.”
7. Acting Roles
Rousey made her film debut in 2014 action sequel The Expendables 3. She also landed a role in Furious 7 in 2015 and will appear in the new Entourage release. She also made a WWE debut at WrestleMania 31 where she faced Triple H and Stephanie McMahon with her partner and Furious co-star, The Rock.
6. “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey
When Ronda Rousey was given the nickname of “Rowdy” by her friends, her first thought was that it might be disrespectful to the professional wrestling legend “Rowdy” Roddy Piper. Before he died, he personally let Ronda use the name and she has since adopted it personally. You’ll be surprised at what she likes to watch on TV now in #5!
5. Favorite Show
Even though she trains extensively, Ronda still finds time to wind down and watch her favorite television shows including Ancient Aliens. “Sometimes at the end of the day, I just need to sit down and learn about some aliens. For some reason it makes me feel good, and I don’t know why.”
4. Buffalo Wings
After winning a fight, Ronda will sit down and put on Ancient Aliens and proceed to inhale a giant plate of buffalo wings to celebrate. She says, “Every time I fight in a city somewhere around the world, we have to scout out the Buffalo wing situation before the fight.”
3. Versus Floyd Mayweather
In 2015, Ronda won the ESPY award for Best Fighter. She then let her words do the fighting when she took a couple of jabs at Floyd Mayweather saying, “I wonder how Floyd feels being beaten by a woman for once. I’d like to see you pretend to not know who I am now.”
2. Ronda’s Modeling Career
As you can see, Ronda isn’t afraid to trade her MMA clothes for a two-piece. When she officially became a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model, she explained the magazine “is trying to, I think, embrace all kind of body types and not just one you know, and I loved the diversity that I saw.”
1. Ronda The Role Model
No matter how you slice it, Ronda is a role model for young athletes, but she doesn’t embrace the responsibility. She admits she is “not infallible enough to be the perfect role model for little girls. I try my best, that’s the best that I can do. I’m sure some mothers are happy about it, and some don’t approve, and that’s up to them and how they choose to parent.”
It’s hard to imagine the UFC without the name Ronda Rousey, even though she hasn’t done so well in her last few matches. She brought women’s fighting to the main event, and she will always be credited for giving female fighters the recognition they deserve.
If the UFC had not been graced with Ronda’s presence, she says she would have followed her love of the ocean and joined the Coast Guard to become a rescue swimmer. She still has time to give back and raises money for the Black Jaguar White Tiger Foundation to save big cats from exploitation.
