Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was a scheduled international passenger flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur that was shot down near the Ukraine–Russia border and crashed near Torez in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine on July 17, 2014. All 283 passengers and 15 crew on board were killed. The crash occurred during the Battle in Shakhtarsk Raion, part of the ongoing war in Donbass, in an area controlled by the Donbass People’s Militia. Till this day, controversy still remains surrounding who shot the plane down.

On a sunny day in 1943 the mayor of St. Louis, William Dee Becker along with other nine politicians were out flying in a military glider. Tragically their military glider malfunctioned after being released from a c-47 cargo plane. Only a single bolt had loosened and it caused a wing to shear off from the glider, sending it and the passengers plummeting to the ground.
