Young people aren’t taught to be killers, but somewhere along the way, they manage to get some dark thoughts in their head. Jesse Pomeroy

In 1872, 12-year-old Jesse Pomeroy was arrested for his constant assault of young boys in Massachusetts and was sent to the State Reform School for Boys. Two years later, he was arrested for the murders of 10-year-old Katie Curran and four-year-old Horace Millen. While he was originally sentenced to death by hanging, the court decided to give him life in prison.

Carl Newton Mahan

In 1929, scrap metal was worth a lot of money. Six-year-old Carl Newton Mahan and his eight-year-old friend Cecil Van Hoose ran across a piece of scrap metal in the street. Cecil punched Mahan in the face and ran off with the metal. Angered by the situation, Mahan grabbed his father’s shotgun and killed Cecil. He was on trial for murder, but he only got sentenced to 15 years at a reform school.

Jon Venables and Robert Thompson

On February 12, 1993, two-year-old James Bulger was shopping with his mom at England’s New Strand Shopping Centre when Jon Venables and Robert Thompson, who were both 10 years old, kidnapped him. For two miles, the boys threw rocks and bricks at Bulger before leaving his body on the train tracks to be severed by an oncoming train. Venables and Thompson were eventually caught, but since they were minors, they were given a short sentence and new identities when they were released from prison.

Lionel Tate

On July 28, 1999, 12-year-old Lionel Tate killed six-year-old Tiffany Eunick with a bevy of wrestling moves. Two years later, Tate became the youngest person to be sentenced to life in prison. In 2004, however, the ruling was overturned, and he was sentenced to 10 years probation. Unfortunately for him, he was arrested for armed robbery in 2006 was sentenced to 40 years in jail.

Alyssa Bustamante

On October 21st, 2009, 15-year-old Alyssa Bustamante killed her 9-year-old neighbor Elizabeth Olten for the simple thrill of it. On February 8, 2012, Bustamante was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Prosecutor Mark Richardson wanted the teen to get life in prison plus 71 years, but the defense pointed to her depression and suicide attempt for the reduced sentence.

Josh Phillips

At the age of 14, Josh Phillips murdered his 8-year-old neighbor Maddie Clifton. The murder gained national attention, including a “48 Hours” special titled “Why Did Josh Kill?” Phillips was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Due to a retroactive application of the Supreme Court’s ruling, he is set to be re-sentenced in February 2017.

Eric Smith

On August 2, 1993, 13-year-old Eric Smith was riding his bike through the park when he invited 4-year-old Derrick Robie to a secluded area. Smith then beat Robie to death with a large rock. A year later, Smith was convicted of second-degree murder. He has been in jail ever since the conviction, and he has been denied parole eight times since 2002.

Jordan Brown

On February 20, 2009, 11-year-old Jordan Brown murdered his father’s pregnant fiancée Kenzie Marie Houk with a youth model 20-gauge shotgun, which was purchased as a gift from his father. Originally, the judge wanted to try him as an adult, but he faced time in a juvenile detention center instead. He was released on June 13, 2016, and he will be on juvenile court probation until the age of 21.

Mitchell Johnson and Andrew Golden

Mitchell Johnson (age 13) and Andrew Golden (age 11) were the masterminds behind the 1998 Westside Middle School mass shooting, which left four students and one teacher dead. The two were sentenced to confinement until they turned 21. If it weren’t for their young ages, they would’ve received the death sentence on the spot.

Barry Dale Loukaitis

In the end, he killed his algebra teacher and two students. He was sentenced to two life sentences and an additional 205 years without parole. Due to a decision from the US Supreme Court, he could be released from jail as early as 2021.

Because of these horrible crimes, these kids managed to miss out on having a normal life. Instead of getting a high school diploma regularly like the rest, they had to gain a GED behind bars. They had to miss out on precious moments with their friends and family. Those that have been released to the public find themselves being restrained and rightfully judged because of their actions. Things would’ve been different for them if they only received counseling for their issues. Instead, they’re stuck having to face the consequences for their crimes for the rest of their lives.
